CSE serves as an English proficiency benchmark for Chinese learners, developed by the National Education Examinations Authority under the Ministry of Education. Its first edition was released in 2018 by the Ministry of Education and the National Language Commission, and has played positive roles in improving exam quality, aligning domestic and international assessments, promoting diversified evaluation, and providing feedback for teaching. The latest revision responds to the needs of teachers and researchers based on extensive research and it aims to offer a more scientific and comprehensive framework for the high-quality development of foreign language education in China.
